Owensboro Health Offering Free Sports Physicals in Owensboro, Henderson

Owensboro Health Orthopedics and Sports Medicine will offer free sports physicals for middle and high school athletes at their Owensboro and Henderson locations in May and June.

Sports physicals are essential for student-athletes because they help ensure they are healthy enough to participate in their chosen sport. During a sports physical, a healthcare provider evaluates the athlete's overall health, including their heart, lungs and musculoskeletal system. They also look for any medical conditions that could put the athlete at risk for injury.

“Healthy athletes contribute to a stronger community,” said Dr. Alexander Brown, orthopedic and sports medicine surgeon. “Offering free sports physicals is one way we support our local students and remove barriers to participation.”

Sports physicals are necessary for several reasons. First, they can help to identify any underlying health conditions that could increase the risk of injury. For example, a doctor may find that an athlete has a heart condition that could put them at risk for sudden cardiac injury.

Second, sports physicals can help identify musculoskeletal problems that could lead to pain or injury. For example, a doctor may find that an athlete has a knee injury that could be aggravated by continued participation in sports.

“A sports physical isn’t just a formality — it’s a chance to catch issues early and help prevent injuries before the season starts,” said Brown. “Making these exams free helps ensure more students can get the clearance and guidance they need to play safely.”
